What is Battle of the Books? Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading program available in schools throughout the Diocese. Students engage in a variety of activities and discussions about books to enhance their understanding and appreciation of literature. A pre-selected book is discussed in detail every week. Students are expected to read the book prior to the discussion. Typically, two books a month will be reviewed. Who can participate? Battle of the Books is open to students in 6th grade. Students in grades 7 and 8 are welcome to participate as student coaches; however, they will not be allowed to participate in the tournament at the end of the school year. When will we meet? 2024-2025 meeting dates TBD. What books will we read? All participants in the Diocese read the same books. There are 12 books on this year’s list representing different genres of literature. Please begin reading the books as soon as possible. As you read a book, you might find it helpful to jot the names of the main characters and a few details about the story on an index card to help you remember when we begin discussing that particular book. Our school library has only one copy of each of the titles on this year’s reading list. Please check your local public library, used bookstore, or online bookseller to find extra copies of the books in print, e-book or audiobook format. |
